Rider Profile: Britney Polites
Tell me a little about yourself. What’s your background?
Ex-musician and current Music/Artist Management professional from the tri-state area.
How did you get into cycling?
Initially, I got into cycling in order to commute to and from work. I was over the MTA and loved blasting through the streets, getting anywhere faster than I would’ve by subway. Then, I started going on long, meandering rides on my days off and eventually signed up for my first non-competitive bike tour a few years ago. I remember thinking 40 miles was an INSANE distance to ride…but I quickly learned that my body was capable of so much more than I ever realized. Now, I want to just keep pushing the limits.
What was your first bike race like?
First official race is coming up soon!
What is the best moment you have had on a bike?
My solo mountain biking excursion in Blue Diamond, Nevada earlier this year. I had to stop myself from tearing up because it was my first time seeing the desert!
How have owning and riding bicycles changed the way you interact with your community?
Getting more serious about fitness and riding has helped me empower other women to ride, too. I can’t tell you how many pals I’ve roped into riding with me, even if it’s just getting them on a Citibike.
What kind of racer do you want to be? Who’s your inspiration?
A fast one, heyooo! But in all seriousness, I want to be a dependable racer who maintains her lines and rides safe.
And Christine D'ercole!!! I first found out about Christine through her spin classes and was so relieved to meet a fitness instructor who actually rode bikes. Her positive attitude and killer workouts keep me inspired!
How would you define success for the 2018 season?
...not getting dropped!
What superhero power would you have and why?
I like being human and flawed but of course any sort of super strength would be convenient for sprinting!
